Second Question: We envisioned and discussed what our community would look like if it were in line with our values. Answers:

I realized the community I think I'm living in is more in my head than out there.

I don't have a community as a place. I live in a diverse community but I'm not part of it.

More sociable, people talking to each other, bustling, active.

No yards, urban, participating in each other's lives.

Saw neighbors working in gardens, children playing. Walked, breathed. I spontaneously helped kids practice baseball.

What is community? Can you define it?

More diversity.

Community garden in green belt. What would that do to bring people together and who could benefit from the food?

How do you bring consensus? - That's how power should operate.

Participation. Involvement.

Need more activism in this neighborhood. Want to continue the groundswell that happened this fall.

Be able to knock on anyone's door if in need of something.

Central marketplace that brings people out.

See people - have to talk.

People from all walks of life.

No arrests - no criminal acts.

Everyone looking at each other in the eye.

"We're glad you're here." Unconditional acceptance.

Racial barriers gone.

Not just geographically bound.

People feel safe and are authentic. Fast change.

Connectedness. We share a common theme/dream.

Incredible degree of acceptance - not just tolerance.

Willingness without "What's in it for me?"

Giving, being involved.

Our schools are little prisons - has to stop. Drop the philosophy - "I suffered so you have to." Schools: nurturing, accepting of differences, help kids be who they are.

Schools: willing to work with all kids where they're at - not "You have to fit the mold." Different options. Broaden opportunity - finding what are your skills, natures, personalities..

How much $ you have doesn't matter.

All schools have enough $ - irrespective of tax base - all kids have equal opportunity for a great education.

Ideal communities start with kids.

Community members' interests and talents are contributed.

Diversity of ideas. Value in disagreement.

It's OK to think!

We all have so much we could share with one another; the way our society is structured - fast, running, corporate.

Greater simplicity. More intimacy between neighbors - "you're not alone". Honesty about where we are at - "I'm struggling."

Need time to just sit.

"Tick, tick, ticking" out of my head.

Technology - computers etc. - has led to higher level of work, higher level of urgency.

Value deep listening.

Wouldn't have to drive everywhere. People with talent are stepping up right here to offer their gifts to our kids.

Companies allow people to work away from office. Leading to more personal time, less commuting.

If I value time more than I value $, then I find I have more time.

Devalue $.
