About This Group:

The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization which includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace and humanitarian service.  Its work is based on the Quaker belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

Second Question: What would your ideal community look like? Answers:

Place where people aren't afraid to share and be who they truly are

Kids playing everywhere and being safe

Lots of different kinds of people old. young. different races.

½ circle of buildings-no straight lines, no cars

Outside "café" where people are sharing

Not sucked into "trying to fit in"

People can be who they really are

Neighbors knock on our door and ask for veggies they need from my garden

Food growing everywhere-we grow it together-anyone can eat it

All front yards are converted to gardens

Street filled with people on bikes

Open space, grass everywhere

People out all the time

Share activities with "strangers" people you just met, including immigrants

Smells like biodiesel (not diesel!)

Kids playing in our yard

Lots of kids and older people and generation X all together

Strips between sidewalk and street-lush, no trash

Gardens are edible

We buy directly from local people, if you have excess you sell/share it.

People respect the earth

Health, well- being, hear laughter all around, kids playing, dogs barking. Lots of parks

There are community centers; big gathering spaces-lots of different kinds of people. Life- long learning space-not quarantined in schools, and food!

Safe and respectful place-four- year- olds can walk to school together-community is responsible for creating safety.

People play music on porches

There would be the ability to disagree and respect each other and accept it without judgment

Place where there is a standing circle where people can go to work on solving problems

People doing handstands and cartwheels

Lots of different languages

It's safe to leave cars unlocked: bikes, too

Complete strangers help one another

No bike locks

No grass-xeriscaping-native plants and food which are natural to climate

Good bookstores and documentary theaters

Police there to help people in need

Health care for all-community

Community sex-ed that's non creepy, rather empowering

Community kitchens where people go to share food

A community where we don't need police--community accountability

A place where people know about their bodies and health.

Third Question: What would your ideal U.S. look like? Answers:

A lot of things are bicycle powered

The highways are light rails

There is political diversity but no proponent to oppression

Consensus based ways of doing things (not just voting) in community

No borders No armies

Neighbors helping neighbors

No government no corporations

People are meaningfully employed AND there's a balance between work and play

Fewer number semis-freight and passenger trains connecting every large- and medium- sized town

Wind and solar power community house-raisers

Instant run-off voting

New name for our country that reflects our values

Local people empowered to rebuild community when disaster strikes

Small community health clinics-variety of healing-not many big hospitals

Live, friendly people answer phone questions

No junk mail-post office delivers personal letters

Farmers markets

Completely demilitarized- then US helps world to de-militarize

Open schools, lots of different people-more welcoming to what people want to learn-truly support people in maximizing their potential and reach their desires

Students cook their meals, create their menus

Economic growth= investing in our community, not buying things

Economy system is based on sustainability

Festivals in winter and summer-can actually get together around warm wine, for example, without needing a permit

Allowed to swim in any lake

Clean H2O

People can afford to live and enjoy life-money isn't an issue

People encourage positive self image in kids

No more paying money to corporate energy, phone, or services only local control and community based services

Local food economics and sustainable farming only local farms

Convert missile silos to find storage

Youth being more integrated into the community

No trash composting

Spirituality at center of all our decisions

Look seriously at other history talk about it-class race

Common good rather than individual advancement is the basis for decision-making

All families and relationships are accepted

Schools where the bathroom stalls have doors on them

There wouldn't be so much stuff to consume

De-regulation wouldn't mean getting rid of regulation that helps system and community function well

More physical activity is appreciated; we wouldn't be out of touch with our bodies

People would be able to do work they care about not just to make money

More alternative, restorative ways to manage conflict
