Hello from Let Us Rise Youth Organizers
Hello Community!
Our organizing program is called Warriors Organizing and Rising in Denver (WORD) and we focus on providing Know Your Rights trainings for the community, particularly people who are not of legal immigration status. We focus on what to do when you are confronted by the police, and how to have healthier interactions. We also offer resources on reporting cases of police abuse and brutality. Our belief is that people need to know their rights so that they can defend themselves and their communities with these tools.
When we canvassed our neighborhood, community members said that they wanted to know how to safely handle situations with the police. They expressed that they were being targeted for no reason.
We encountered one story that particularly inspired us to do this work. It was the last house on the canvass, and we were hesitant to go because it looked like it was going to rain. We decided that if we were going to get wet, we were going to get wet, and went to the house. Once inside, we could tell that they were a hard working immigrant family. They told us how someone had broken into their house, slashed their tires, and had broken their windows. They called the police, but the police didn’t take a report or help them in any way. Instead, they took their cousin to jail.
Our community is scared that police will find a reason to ticket or arrest them if they call. We realize that this is a serious problem in the community, and that people who are victimized are afraid to call for help.
As residents of the area, we hold a greater level of trust with neighbors and fellow community members. We are working to liberate our community from police abuse and fear.
